Devotional: Remaining Open-handed in Transition

“‘But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.’”

I’ve always wondered what it would be like to be part of the same church, career, or neighborhood for decades. Having moved twenty-plus times and wearing many different vocational titles, I recognize I will never know the stability many others have found joy in.

But, if there’s any truth I’ve learned in all this personal change, it’s this: we are all always in a place of transition. 

Sometimes they are small changes, like someone close to us moves away or we get a promotion at work. These are the changes that affect only a small part of life. 

Sometimes the changes are big ones, like moving or the loss of someone significant in your life. These are the life-altering changes that are often out of our control.

Regardless, all transitions feel fuzzy, unclear, and messy. 

Yet Jesus specifically says not to worry about the future…tomorrow. In these verses, He reminds me that God provides for all my needs. I must only be faithful to him by seeking out His kingdom first.

So, here I am. In the fuzzy, unclear, and messy. It’s a good thing God knows where he’s taking me, and I can be comfortable in this uncertain space.

Prayer: Father, when life is unclear or uncertain, I am grateful that I can trust in you to lead me. Keep me from worry or anxiousness as you lead me through this season of transition in my life. I trust you to guide and lead me, no matter what circumstances arise. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
