Worry Like the Sparrow

For years I did lots of work on myself to name the past. I’ve also spent time considering the future. This has left little time for me to intentionally lean into the present. I’m beginning to feel my lack of presence in my physical body, forcing me to face the present more urgently.

“Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they?” Matthew 6:26, CSB

I wrestle with my high sense of obligation. I plan and plot my days, in color-coded blocks on my calendar, so I can hold onto some type of order. If I just take the next step forward, then I’ll continue to make progress. After all, isn’t that what life is about?

“Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying?” Mathew 6:27, CSB

What I’m learning is that while there is a place for honing my gifts and talents from God, for God, it does not replace simply being with God. There are some habits I’ve put into place, but I don’t think the specifics matter so much. What does matter is that the act of centering doesn’t become another task item.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.” Matthew 6:33, CSB

Dear God, I thank you today for today. For this moment. For this breath. As I go through my hours, remind me gently that you are with me in every step. As I pursue you, I trust for you to provide for my needs. In Jesus’ name, Amen
